FREEZER CHALLENGE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS

In 2022, the University of Illinois earned an Honorable Mention in the International Freezer Challenge. Despite not receiving a 1st place ranking for the fifth year in a row, we still had a fantastic year of energy savings.

Our top labs were awarded with gift certificates to high-end dining establishments in the Champaign-Urbana area, as well as Certificates in Leadership in Sustainable Lab Practices.

Overall, 44 laboratories participated, leading to over 2 million samples being discarded. The efforts of these labs saved over 795 kWh per day, enough energy to power 26.2 standard U.S. homes for a year!
